Ahead Partnership help Leeds West Academy students build their confidence with enterprise challenge
Ahead Partnership worked with local business volunteers from Barclays to deliver a series of enterprise workshops aimed at building the confidence of a select group of their students, allowing them to work on an exciting business challenge to develop skills such as communication, team work and business acumen.
The challenge was completed over three interactive sessions at the school with a small group of students aged 13 - 15 who attend Nuture Group sessions each Friday.
The first ice breaker session helped students explore our favourite foods, understand more about local street food space Trinity Kitchen and think about what food they might like to sell if starting up a pop-up food business. They also completed some market research by finding out what was already selling in Trinity Kitchen and how they could be different.
In the second session students got to meet their business volunteers and examine why marketing and finance in a business are important. Students used the computer to create a logo for their business idea and also discussed how much they could sell their food for by researching the prices of their ingredients online.
The final session was a practical cooking session. Students got to make the food they had come up with, with a focus on teamwork, and the Burger Calzone was invented! The group ate the food together and reflected on what essential skills they had learnt that would be valuable to them for future careers.
Stephanie Gordon, Project Coordinator at Ahead Partnership for this project, said: "This project has worked really well with this group of students to help them think about their skills and careers beyond school. 100% of the students that took part said the project improved their confidence and self-belief and 100% said the project improved their feelings about the future which shows how inspiring working with business volunteers to find out more about the world of work can be."< Back to all news stories
