BUSINESS BLOG: WYG's experience of Make the Grade
by Julie O'Driscoll, Learning & Development Advisor, WYG
Our Business Blogs are an honest insight into the partnerships we have with businesses all over the UK and the impact we help them to have in their communities. This post comes from Julie from global consultancy firm WYG who have been a #MaketheGrade lead partner for four years.
WYG is a global project management and technical consultancy employing over 1,600 people and operating from more than 50 locations across the UK, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Our people are our main asset. We are designers, project managers, engineers, surveyors, town planners, environmental specialists and business services professionals. This sheer breadth of skills and knowledge enables us to undertake the most ambitious projects, from conception to realisation, and make our clients’ vision come to life. To perpetuate our industry’s success, it is of vital importance that we inspire future generations to our careers and nurture new talent.
This is exactly what our excellent relationship with Ahead Partnership has enabled us to do for several years.
We have been involved in a number of initiatives with Ahead Partnership's programme of events, such as career events, employability workshops, and the recent #GirlTechLCR event in Leeds.
#GirlTechLCR was an excellent opportunity for WYG to educate girls about misconceptions surrounding technical careers and alleviate the doubts that might hinder their inclination to choose these professions. As we celebrated International Women’s Day encouraging women to #BeBoldForChange, this was an initiative that spoke to the heart of the gender parity debate. I attended the event with Tim Burkham (our Marketing and Digital Manager) and Tim has had excellent feedback from the students themselves on the sessions he delivered.
WYG’s most recent initiative with Ahead Partnership has been our involvement in a mentoring programme at Abbey Grange Academy which started in December 2016 and will continue until June 2017.
Once again, this has been an excellent opportunity for WYG to help students, at a crucial time in their lives; to gain confidence, sharpen focus and increase motivation to recognise their goals. Our team of six mentors are helping students, aged 14-15, to understand the different routes available into employment, whilst showcasing the many disciplines that WYG can offer.
Our vision is to inspire positive change through our imagination and expertise. Working with Ahead Partnership gives us a unique opportunity to make that happen for future generations.
