Leeds City College Engineering Brief with Arup & Carillion

BTEC Level 3 Engineering students get their first taste of a real life brief with help from Carillion & Arup.

FOCUS: Give college students the opportunity to apply their learning to a real life brief with guidance from local industry professionals.

BTEC Engineering students from Leeds City College attended sessions at multinational construction firm Carillion's offices and were set a real life brief to design and engineer a weakened bridge at Leeds General Infirmary.

Workshops were then hosted by Carillion, global engineering firm Arup and partner crane hire firm Ainscough to give students a more in-depth look at CAD, writing risk assessments and method statements, but also soft skills such a teamwork and presentation skills. 

Students worked on their solution in small teams and presented their ideas to a panel of engineering professionals. 


  • 100% of students that took part said this challenge improved their CAD and technical drawing skills
  • 100% of students that took part said it improved their understanding of civil engineering and business
  • The number of students considering civil engineering for a career saw an uplift of 30%
