Year 9 get an introduction to the world of engineering with WYG
Year 9 students from Abbey Grange C of E Academy in Leeds and Lightcliffe Academy in Halifax took part in an interactive engineering day with business volunteers from global engineering consultants WYG last month.
The Design Technology and Engineering students too part in workshops designed by the volunteers focusing on the constraints linked to planning and the sessions covered building/construction methods and design, environmental considerations and masterplanning. In the afternoon, they worked in teams to design and pitch a bridge idea for the new Kirkstall Forge site in North Leeds to the experts from WYG.
Georgina Hughes, our Project Coordinator in the region, said: "The day aimed to give students knowledge on the various constraints when planning and building a new project and the processes behind them. They all got stuck in when it came to creating and pitching their own ideas and now have a clearer idea of how they can apply the knowledge and skills they will learn in those GCSE subjects, before they begin the courses in September, in the real world.
We must thank the volunteers from WYG who designed and created the content for the day to help young people get that clear understanding and develop their skills and confidence for the future."< Back to all news stories
