Arup Engineering Awareness Week 2016 (1)

Our Business Blogs are an honest insight into the partnerships we have with businesses all over the UK and the impact we help them to have in their communities. This post comes from Kay from global engineering consultancy firm Arup who have been a #MaketheGrade lead partner for seven years.

Arup is a global engineering and consultancy company, operating in over 90 offices worldwide, with more than 13,000 employees. We’re a unique and independent organisation because we are owned by our employees, so we can make sound decisions for the future, choose our own clients and deliver solutions that are high in quality and value. We really want to make a positive difference in the world – and that starts with looking for the best and brightest talent to join us.

In 2010, we launched our Engineering Awareness Week initiative with Ahead Partnership. We invite students from across the Yorkshire region aged between 14-17 to our offices for a week where they gain hands on experience and learn about the career options available in the built environment.

The students work in teams to develop a company and they make decisions on the various elements which are involved in a large site proposal. Through this they develop many transferable skills, grow in confidence and gain knowledge on how the profession works. The week concludes with the students delivering their plans to a panel of senior Arup members and with the support of their teachers and Ahead Partnership.

We’re delighted that over the last seven years Engineering Awareness Week has become more popular and this year we’ve expanded the initiative to our offices in Manchester. Last year 100% of students fed back that the week helped them to think about their career options and 90% of students said it helped them to improve their understanding on how the business works.

We aim to encourage and excite the next generation of engineers, designers, planners and consultants and we look forward to continuing our work with Ahead Partnership to achieve this goal.
