Growing Talent Green

It is estimated that 24 million jobs in the green economy will be created worldwide by 2030, and the demand isn't limited to obvious sectors such as renewables and construction. The UK has seen increasing demand for green skills across a wide range of industries such as fashion, technology, transport and finance since 2017, but many people still have a set idea about one "green industry" rather than understanding how green jobs and skills are required across every industry if we're to make lasting global change for the sake of our environment.

We know that young people are wonderfully passionate about environmental issues such as climate change, but as the landscape of green jobs is evolving so quickly it can be hard for them to get the right knowledge and information on the career opportunities that will help them be part of the solution.

Growing Talent Green is a national programme funded by the John Lewis Partnership Community Investment Fund that will help secondary school aged students make informed choices about careers and base the important decisions that they will make in the years ahead on the most up to date information on the economy, the workplace and wider skills demands.

Bringing together employers of all sectors and sizes, Growing Talent Green will organise and deliver a range of employer-led activities, supported by a strong suite of digital resources, that will introduce young people to opportunities in green jobs and skills that are likely to see considerable growth over the next few years. This programme will encourage students to develop the right skills for the roles organisations will be creating and to show young people the pathways into concrete opportunities.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Continuing over the next 12 months, activities that profile and contextualise job opportunities within green will be delivered in schools and colleges in Aberdeen, Birmingham, Peterborough, Tunbridge Wells, Chester, York, Sheffield, Ashford and Basingstoke. Both national and local employers will be involved in the design and delivery of activities and resources which will include careers panels, speed networking, Meet the Employer events, employer profile videos and parent/carer events.

The programme includes a mix of in-person and virtual activities to be able to reach as many young people as possible through the ongoing challenges of the pandemic.

There are virtual activities taking place across all nine locations in 2022 and 2023, however we can also offer in-person volunteering slots in Sheffield, York and Birmingham. There is no charge for organisations or schools/colleges to get involved. You can read about some of the success of this programme so far by clicking here.
