Netherwood Advanced Learning Centre introduced to the world of work

Year 8 students from Netherwood Advanced Learning Centre in Barnsley got an early introduction to the world of work with the help of Ahead Partnership and 17 local employers this week.

220 students took part in a careers event where they were able to speak to volunteers from 17 businesses including Barnsley Council, the Royal Airforce, Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust and Barnsley Digital Media Centre about the skills and qualities needed as well as the breadth of roles available in their sector.

This was followed by a careers panel of employees from XPO Logistics, HMA Digital, Keepmoat, Babington Group and Cambridge University where the students were able to ask their own questions about the working world and routes into employment.

Alex Peel, our Project Coordinator in the region, said: "The aim of today was to introduce Year 8 to the world of work and make them aware of the opportunities available in Barnsley as well as the wider Yorkshire region long before they make their GCSe subject choices.

"Today really raised the students' aspirations and has been an excellent guide when it comes to making those all-important careers choices."
