Northern Powergrid and Ahead Partnership Make the Grade in Energy

Ahead Partnership and Northern Powergrid win CIPR Community Relations Campaign award.

Northern Powergrid and Ahead Partnership have been awarded the Community Relations Campaign award at the CIPR PRide Awards 2015. The award recognises and celebrates the exceptional public relations talent and commitment implemented into business across the region. The category had several worthy businesses nominated and to receive this is a real recognition of the fantastic work we can do together. The judges were impressed that the Make the Grade programme has helped to give young people heightened awareness of the world of work and equipped them with valuable life skills, such as knowing how to apply for jobs and succeed in interviews.

Northern Powergrid has been a lead partner for Ahead Partnership’s flagship Make the Grade Scheme for 2 years. The programme of activities aim to equip young people with the skills and knowledge required to access and progress within the energy sector.

The main objectives of Northern Powergrid’s bespoke scheme included the need to address the skills shortage within the energy sector, reach out to young people from primary school to graduate level, address the gender gap within a male-dominated workforce and provide colleagues with volunteering opportunities.

To achieve the scheme objectives a programme of 20 activities has been implemented throughout the 2014/2015 academic year, developing both the students and volunteers skills. The interactive tasks included a STEM enterprise challenge for primary schools, Primary World of Work Days, workshops based around practical and employability skills and guest speeches.

Catherine Harris, Communications Manager from Northern Powergrid says, “Working with Ahead Partnership on the Make the Grade in Energy programme has provided Northern Powergrid with a fantastic opportunity to reach out into our community, and help young people think about their futures.  The success of the project has been down to the fantastic support of Northern Powergrid employees who have volunteered their time and skills in schools, and without whom, the programme would not have been the success we see today. Ahead Partnership have been a fantastic organisation to work with and we look forward to our continued partnership and expanding the Make the Grade in Energy programme to reach more young people in the future.”

The future sees further support from Northern Powergrid, enhancing the scope and stretch of the Make the Grade in Energy scheme. Working with Ahead Partnership more bespoke and engaging activities will be introduced into partner schools. This academic year alone Northern Powergrid will support over 3000 students across the North.
