Growing Talent Digital

Growing Talent Digital web banner

Our economic growth is being hampered by a UK-wide digital skills shortage. The Digital Skills for the UK Economy report states that the digital skills shortage is linked to one in five of all vacancies and that 72% of large companies and 49% of SMEs are suffering tech skill gaps. The Government’s recent policy paper states that “The Fourth Industrial Revolution is of a scale, speed and complexity that is unprecedented […] it will disrupt nearly every industry in every country, creating new opportunities and challenges for people, places and businesses.”

As digital natives, today’s young people should be best primed to reap the benefits of this, but they need support to improve their awareness of the spectrum of opportunities available to them, as well as advancing their knowledge and confidence in accessing them.

Growing Talent Digital is a national programme funded by the John Lewis Partnership Community Investment Fund that helps secondary school aged students make informed choices about careers and base the important decisions that they will make in the years ahead on the most up to date information on the economy, the workplace and wider skills demands.

Bringing together employers of all sectors and sizes, Growing Talent Digital organises and delivers a range of employer-led activities, supported by a strong suite of digital resources, that will introduce young people to opportunities in digital that are likely to see considerable growth over the next few years. This programme encourages students to develop the right skills for the roles organisations will be creating and to show young people the pathways into concrete opportunities.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Continuing over the next 12 months, activities that profile and contextualise job opportunities within digital will be delivered in schools and colleges in Aberdeen, Birmingham, Peterborough, Tunbridge Wells, Chester, York, Sheffield, Ashford and Basingstoke. Both national and local employers will be involved in the design and delivery of activities and resources which will include careers panels, speed networking, Meet the Employer events, employer profile videos and parent/carer events.

The programme includes a mix of in-person and virtual activities to be able to reach as many young people as possible through the ongoing challenges of the pandemic and there is no charge for organisations and schools/colleges to get involved.

There are virtual activities taking place across all nine locations, however we can also offer in-person volunteering slots in Sheffield, York and Birmingham. You can find out about some of the success of the programme so far by clicking here.
