West Yorkshire Bus Alliance lesson resources help young people understand the future of transport

wyba lessons promo

West Yorkshire Bus Alliance have been working with Ahead Partnership over the last two years to deliver an education engagement programme that will inspire young people about the public transport sector and promote greener travel.

This skills initiative from bus operators Arriva, First, Transdev and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority has seen over 3,000 young people across the region take part in hands-on activities and real life challenge briefs to get a better understanding of the future of transport and the opportunities for them in it.

The latest opportunity from the programme is a suite of Key Stage 3 Maths and Science resources, available free to all schools in West Yorkshire, which help students develop their core subject skills within the context of real life challenges in the transport sector. They are available now to any school in West Yorkshire that wishes to use them.

Key Stage 3 Maths resource

Students will take on the role of decision makers at a bus company to plan a bus timetable that gets festivalgoers to their musical destination on time and within budget.

The activity is linked to the curriculum by helping students to:

  • Represent given information in tables and charts
  • Interpret and draw conclusions from given data, displayed in charts and tables
  • Develop reasoning and evaluation skills, to justify decisions.

The resource comes with everything the subject teacher and students need to take part in the lesson activity with supporting Powerpoints and worksheets.

Key Stage 3 Science resource

Students will research and draw up their plans to improve carbon emissions in their local area by making the bus network greener.

The activity is linked to the curriculum by helping students to:

  • Investigate the contribution that natural and human chemical processes make to our CO2 emissions
  • Understand how human activities affect the carbon cycle
  • Evaluate implications of a proposal by Bus Alliance to reduce carbon emissions across a city.

The resource comes with everything the subject teacher and students need to take part in the lesson activity with supporting Powerpoints and worksheets.

New Fare Deal for Young People launched in July

As part of this programme we have been helping the West Yorkshire Bus Alliance find out the views and opinions of young people on bus travel in Leeds, Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield with surveys and youth forums to hear their voices and make changes based on their feedback.

We were delighted to work with the West Yorkshire Bus Alliance on this youth engagement for the new MY ticket system which launches on 25 July. The MY MCard scheme has easier and cheaper ticket fares for those aged under 19 that can be used across operators and across the region, making it even better value and simpler for young people to get around.
